NLGJA Los Angeles

Southern California's Hub for LGBTQ+ Journalists

Find Community

We are committed to fostering a vibrant community of queer and trans journalists and news media professionals from all over Southern California, providing opportunities for us to build and strengthen our networks, center and celebrate LGBTQ+ narratives and history and grow and develop our media skills.

Programming with Impact

We believe collaboration is key in achieving our goal of building a strong community. As such, many of our events feature a partnership with a local newsroom, media organization or media affinity group.

Mixers, Meetups, Panels and More

Our mixers, which typically take place during the last week of each month, feature a special guest — someone our members and community would benefit from meeting, like editors of queer publications and advocates of fair representation of LGBTQ+ stories.

Working Queers, our recently launched coworking meetup series, brings together freelancers and other folks in media who work from home for a fun and productive afternoon on the second Wednesday of the month, with the location alternating between the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Liberation Coffee House in Hollywood and various coffee houses in Southern California.

Our chapter also produces a variety of community and industry-related events, like roundtables with trans and non-binary journalists using their skills to create community and empower LGBTQ+ folks in media, as well as panels on topics ranging from queer entertainment criticism to getting a book published as a journalist. All of our community events are free to attend!

If you have any questions or are a representative of a company or venue that would like to sponsor our programming or host us for an event, please email LA@nlgja.org.

Virtual Events

In order to make our programming as accessible as possible and widen our reach, we partner with NLGJA chapters in other states and organizations like the Trans Journalists Association and LGBTQ+ Editors Association, as well as media companies like Rotten Tomatoes, to produce virtual discussions on a variety of topics, including the double-edged sword of queer visibility in media and the use of language and creativity as tools for liberation and inclusion.
